All new for 2021, the Suburban/Tahoe soldier on into the new decade with new tech, updated styling and a high price that just gets higher. The big news though is more room and an independent rear suspension.
First up, the Suburban. There are 4 trim levels to choose from: base LT, Premier, High Country, and Z71. Those are spread between 2 engines: a base 5.3 liter 355 horse V8 or a 6.2 liter 420 horse V8. Both are paired to a 10 speed auto with a choice of rear or 4WD.
The base trim is the LT. Probably the longest running nameplate in history, its most likely the most expensive it’s been in its 85 years. The base LT starts at an eye watering $56,500 ($58,095 with 4WD). But this time around you do get standard leather seating, unlike past base models that were cloth benched, column shifted models that started in the high $40’s just 10+ years ago. Stand out standard features include:
Wireless charging
Bose 9 speaker audio system
Leather appointed first and second row seats
USB ports
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
10.2” infotainment screen
Other than these its pretty base features wise. Luckily, exterior colors aren’t, unlike other GM vehicles. There are 11 exterior color choices to choose from. 2 of those (Cherry Red Tintcoat & Iridescent Pearl Tintcoat) are $495 and $995 options respectively. I stuck with Black as usual. Interior leather choices are just Jet Black or Gray.
GM must’ve realized that having a base model start at nearly $60k without many options would not be a good look, especially as new cars get more expensive every year. Luckily choosing the base Suburban, you can make it not feel so base. There are 7 option packages to choose from:
LT Signature Package $5,085 (discounted from $5,585): Includes memory settings for the power seats, power folding 60/40 split for the 2nd and 3rd rows, pano power sunroof and 20” polished aluminium wheels.
Luxury Package $2,820 : Includes HD Surround Vision, Rear Pedestrian Alert, memory settings for drivers seat and outside mirrors and steering column, integrated turn signal indicators, heated steering wheel, heated 2nd row seats, power folding 2nd and 3rd rows.
Rear Media & Nav Package $2,490 : rear media system and a Nav system integrated into the 10.2” color infotainment screen.
Max Traliering Package $495
Texas Edition $25 : nothing more than Texas edition badging on the base LT (Premier Trim gets the badging and “22 aluminium wheels with this package).
Driver Alert Package : No coast. Standard suite of driving aids
Now of course come the caveats with the packages. Selecting the LT Signature Package automatically selects the Luxury Package, Max Traliering Pack and Driver Alert Packs pretty much bundling them together. So I left that the way it was and selected the rear media package as well. Effectively selecting all the packages together (except the Texas Edition pack).
As with other Chevy truck models, the Suburban gets quite a few accessories and upgraded wheel options ranging from the standard size “18 wheels all the way up to $3k “22 options. There aren’t really any interior options aside from accessories (things line floor liners and cargo nets). With none of those selected, the Suburban LT rang in at $65,370; $68,470 with 4WD.
Next trim up is Premier. Starting at $66,595, its standout standard features include:
Magnetic Ride Control
Lane Change Alert with Park Assist
“20 Wheels
Preforated Leather Seats
Its more luxury oriented, but not as luxury as the High Country trim if that makes sense. Exterior color choices are the same as are the choice of a Black leather interior. The only difference here is that there is no gray choice for interior leather. You can choose Black or Jet Black/Maple Sugar leather seats. I choose these.
With this having more standard luxury features, option packages on this trim a slimmed down to just 3:
Premium Package $4,485 : Includes the max traliering package, pano roof and adaptive cruise control.
Max Traliering Package $465
Texas Edition $2,000 : Includes “22 wheels, Texas Edition badging and wheels locks.
Selecting the Premium Package selects all the packages except the Texas Pack. There are a couple individual options that aren’t in packages. Namely a $2k rear media system and $1,745 power retractable steps with an illuminated approach feature. I choose both of these. With no accessories added, a Suburban Premier rang in at a crazy but no surprising $73,075; $76,075 with 4WD.
The next trim up is High Country. Starting at $70,895 its the most luxurious you can get a Suburban
without going to GMC for a Denali or Cadillac for the Escadale. The High Country is the only trim that gets the 6.2 liter V8. Its standout standard features include:
Magnetic Ride Control with 4 corner air ride adaptive suspension
High Country badgaing and interior stitching
“22 wheels on all season rubber
“15 HUD display
HD Surround Vision and rear vision
Exterior colors are the same as well as the choice of Black interior leather. The only difference is the High Country gets a choice of Jet Black/Mocha leather seats. I choose these.
There are 3 packages on this trim as well 2 of them, the Premium Package and the Max Trailering
. The Premium Package on the High Country however is $4,605 and comes with power retractable assist steps, pano roof and adaptive cruise control. The only package that’
s different from the other trims is a $3,355 Tech Package that includes adaptive cruise, the traliering package the rear media system. The Tech package cant be selected with the Premium Package however. So I stuck with all the packages but the Tech. With no accessories selected and the only stand alone option selected of the rear media system for $2k, a Suburban
High Country rings in at $80,195; $83,195 with 4WD.
Lastly is the off-road ready Suburban
Z71. Only available with 4WD (of course) and the 5.3 V8, it starts at $63,495. Sadly the 6.2 V8 cant be chosen on the Z71. It includes:
Red tow hooks and skid plate
“20 wheels and all terrain tires
4 corner air ride adaptive suspension
High approach angle front fascia
Black exterior trim
All exterior and interior (Black or Gray) color choices are the same.
There are 6 option packages. 5 are the same as the other trims. The main difference is the $4,785 Z71 Signature Package. It includes the Luxury Package, Trailering Package and a Pano Roof. I selected this and the other packages. With no accessories selected the Suburban Z71 rings in at $70,470.
With the Tahoe being essentially a short wheelbase Surburban, every single thing is the same. From the engines to the trim levels, everything. So there’ s no reason to go too in depth with it. Here is the pricing for each trim, base price then loaded with front or 4WD:
LT starts at $55,095 ; $62,670 loaded; $65,770 with 4WD
Premier starts at $63,895; $70,375 loaded; $73,375 with 4WD
High Country starts at $70,895; $77,495 loaded: $80,495 with 4WD
Z71 starts at $60,495; $67,770 loaded.
These things should sell well like they always do. Until GM’s discounts arrive however, buyers should be prepared for sticker shock as these are both now in luxury vehicle territory pricewise.

No pricing for the diesel yet?

Nope sadly. I spent a good amount of time trying to even find specs for it. It’s briefly mentioned on Chevys site but says late availability. So as of right now no pricing for it or specs. Which is typical GM. Announce something anticipated, then release nothing about it when people want to know about it, then wait so long for it to come that people forget and then don’t care.

Good write-up thanks. Couple observations:
Max Traliering Package. Is this supposed to be Trailering ?
“15 HUD display I think you mean HUD or Head-Up Display, not Head-Up Display Display.
And, in closing.... holy crap we’re living in a time where Chevy will sell you an optioned ‘Burb for $83k and a ‘ Hoe for $80k.....crazy stuff.

Dang, that means even longer for a used one. I love the new design, but regardless of the fact I could afford it I won’t pay that much for one. What I spent on my 2015 when I purchased in 2017 was the most I’ve ever spent on something that wasn’t my house (yay nearly zero interest rate loans!).
I really want a new one with the diesel though. I will go and test drive one as soon as they are out, then it will just be fun me fighting with frugal me.

Yea something tells me the diesel wont be widely bought, so I’d wait 2-3 years for one. And thats if you can find one. But yea dont get this thing new. The prices for full size American SUV’s are insane now.
